My Great
Grandfather, Charles SANDERSON (aged 28), his wife
Catherine Francis nee RUSSELL
(aged 31), daughters Francis
Ann (aged 4) and Mary Ann (aged 2) and Charles's Mother,
Susannah Rachel nee HAGGARD (aged 63) sailed from
London
on the Catherine Stewart Forbes, on October 11th. 1851, arriving in
Auckland NZ. on 9th. March 1852. Their son, Charles John, was born
in Cook Street, Auckland, in 1853.
(The
Catherine Stewart Forbes was a 3 masted ship, built in 1818 by Henry
and William PITCHER, Northfleet, Kent. She was 117'3" x 29'4"
1/2" x 5'll"
between decks.)
Charles SANDERSON
was appointed to the position of the First
Provincial Engineer (Auckland) at the
princely Salary of £400.
He set up his family in Chapel Street. His wife,
Catherine Francis
SANDERSON, was a
Teacher of the Pianoforte and Librarian for
the Auckland Choral Society.

My G.Grandfather, John GIBB, of
Aberdeen, SCT. arrived in NZ. round about 1863, We first found him in Hokitika
. He married Jessie Hopkins WILSON, of Avondale
Lanarkshire (who came to NZ. in1864, ) at First Church, Dunedin, on 27th.
July, 1868. They then moved North to Karaka Creek, Thames, where
John appears to have been a fairly successful Gold Miner. They had 8 children,
all of which lived! Eldest was my Grandmother - Elizabeth Mary, b. 25 June,
1869, then Jessie Hopkins, Ellen, John Greig, Francis Wilson,
William Leonard, Anna Isabella and finally Emily Christine b. 16
Oct.1882!!! After the death of his wife, John GIBB mar. Mary Bell WILSON, of
Avondale, LKS. and had one more son, Charles John.
This is our Scottish Line, from Lanarkshire and Aberdeen.

My Grandfather,
James SPENCE b. in Bristol, and his wife, Mary
Ann, nee GRENFELL of St.Just, Penwith, Cornwall, arrived in
the S.Island of NZ. - Canterbury Area - on the 'Otago', in August 1865. Worked on a
sheep station in Malvern, Canterbury for a few years, moving to Otonga East, North of
Whangarei. (North Island) in the late 1870's where they farmed.
They had one
son, my father, James SPENCE Jnr. who married
Olive Wilson SANDERSON. They spent some years in San
Francisco and Vancouver BC. where both their daughters were born, returning to New
Zealand in the 1930's
(The 'Otago' No. 48,543, which was owned by McMECKAN, Blackwood & Co., was a screw Steamer of 977 tons gross. Length 236 ft., depth 15.5 ft., built at Glasgow for the Panama Company in September 1863. She made her first passage to Melbourne Aust. in 52 days, under steam and sail, then regarded as a very fast time. (She was totally wrecked south of Nugget Point (NZ) on December 4, 1876. All hands were saved.)
