ARRIVAL of Pioneers.The 71st Anniversary.
Immigrants of the Ship ‘Ann’
24 Known Survivors.Today is the 71st
anniversary of the arrival in Auckland of the Ship ‘Ann’ with about
70
passengers who formed the original out posting in Otahuhu district. The
vessel left
Carrickfergus near Belfast Ireland in October 1847 and
after a lengthy passage of
which 6 weeks were spent lying off the
Cape, the anchor was dropped in Auckland
Harbour on the 7th
May 1848*.
The passengers who arrived by
the ‘ANN’ were among the very early settlers in New
Zealand and a
number of them have passed away but at least 23 of the more youthful
among are known to be alive in New Zealand.
These are:-
Miss L. GALLAGHER of
Avondale
The ages of these
survivors range from 72 to 89 years. Mrs PERRY another passenger
who
subsequently returned to England was known to be alive in Sommerset some
months ago. The late Mrs HASLAM who died in Auckland last month was
also a
passenger by the ‘Ann’ and has been in New Zealand 70 years and
11 months.
She was the sister of Mr J. FOX of
Ohaupo.
It is not
generally known that the Bridge over the salt water creek
at Penrose
Otahuhu Road, known as 'Ann's Bridge' was built by the male
passengers of the
'Ann', hence its name.

(In the 'First Fleet

especially afflicting the children. There were 46 deaths, mainly of
children.")
The Eagle Speed. Arrival in
Auckland
The fine ship Eagle Speed made her anchorage
in the harbor yesterday morning
16th October 1864, after a protracted voyage of 125 days from London. She
left
Gravesend on the 12th June, and after a succession of adverse winds down
the
channel, took her final departure from near Mounte's Bay Cornwell on the
22nd
June. Light Variable winds were experienced until crossing the Equator,
on
the 1st August. During the 19 days the ship was detained by these winds,
between
Cape de Verde Islands and the equator, it was discovered that the main
piece
of the rudder was sprung, and that the tiller made nearly double the angle
with
the ships keel of that of the tall piece.
This unfortunate circumstance considerably impeded the progress of the ship
during the remainder of the voyage, as it was found necessary, in order to
steer
the ship at all, to carry much less sail than she otherwise would have
done.
From the equator to the Cape of Good Hope the usual trade winds and
southerly
weather was experienced. The Island of Tristan D'Aounha was made on the
25th
August, and the Meridian of the Cape on the 1st September. From this point
to
the S.W cape of Tasmania the ship had, for most part, steady breeze
and fair weather.
It was however found impossible to bring out the sailing capabilities of
this fine
vessel, in consequence of the damage done to the rudder, even under an
ordinary
pressure of sail no canvas could be kept on the mizzen mast. Immedediately
upon
the discovery of the disabled condition of the rudder, the necessary
precautions
were at once taken, and a spare tiller was forged on board.
The New Zealand coast was sighted on the 13th October, and the North Cape
rounded the following day, Cape Brett being passed on Saturday. Moderate
winds
from the N.R have prevailed on the coast. The above report will account for the
protracted and tedious passage of this vessel. Before leaving Auckland a
new
rudder will be shipped, and we have no doubt the fine qualities of this clipper
ship
will be brought out on her return trip.
The Eagle Speed is in command of Captain BRINSDEN, who it will be
remembered,
came last year in command of the "William Miles". Captain
BRINSDEN, has on
this occasion , won the esteem of the passengers, who speak of him in the
highest
terms, and the neat and cleanly appearance of the ship upon entering the
harbor
is commendable.
The total number of passengers aboard is 101, a large number of whom are
the
Church of England Settlement, and have received free passage.
Dr. Fredrick John ROBINSON, F.B.C.S. England, is the medical officer and
Superintendent in charge. There have been no deaths and only one birth
during
the voyage.
The Eagle Speed is one of the largest vessels that have entered our harbor,
her
Register being 1237 tons. She has on board over 1500 tons of merchandise.
Her
handsome saloon is particularly worthy of notice. It is fitted up with the
latest
improvements and has every possible convenience or the comfort of passengers.

The Ship Empress from London
The splendid American
Clipper Ship Empress, in command of Captain Ellis,
arrived in Harbour on
Sunday night. In yesterdays issue we briefly announced
her arrival, but owing
to the late hour when she dropped anchor we were
unable to give full
report.
The following are the particulars of the voyage as kindly
furnished us by
Captain Ellis;
"The Empress quitted Gravesend on
the 3rd February, landed the pilot on the
5th and took her final departure
from the Lizard on the 8th February. She
crossed the Equator on the 3rd
March, in 23* West, and was becalmed twelve
days in from 15* to 20* South. On
the 2nd April passed the Meridian of the
Cape in 46* 28 S. and Desolation
Island on the 11th of the same month, off
which the vessel encountered strong
gales and heavy confused seas, which
caused her to roll and labour heavily
for some days. When in longitude 163*
the vessel experienced heavy Northerly
gales, and was compelled to take the
Southern route. The Snares were made on
the 1st May only 81 days from home.
Experienced variables winds off the
coast and was becalmed two days off the
East Cape, after which she
encountered a heavy North-Westerly gale, and
arrived in Auckland at 11 pm on
Sunday night, having taken pilot on board at
Rangitoto at 10.30pm. The
Empress has accomplished the passage in 95 days
from the start, being the
quickest made during the season. On her last trip
she made the passage here
in 92 days. on which occasion it will be remembered
she brought the
officers men of the Military Train. The Empress brings a large
cargo of general merchandise and nearly 300 passengers, a list of which we
published our last. The greatest harmony appear to have prevailed amongst
them
during the voyage, and from the testimonials which appear else where,
it will
seem that the Captain, and Chief Office won the esteem and goodwill
of those
placed under their charge. "
Captain Ellis and Mr Drew The
Chief Office, have now made two rapid voyages
in the Empress to this port,
and we must congratulate them upon their success.
Testimonials To The
Captain and Chief Officer Of The Empress....
We have the great pleasure
in Publishing the following testimonials...
"Dear Sir.... Our pleasant
and prosperous voyage being now nearly ended, we
wish, ere we part from you
and the good ship, to tender to you our admiration
of your nautical ability
as a Commander, your courtesy as a gentleman, and our
gratitude for the
anxiety you have always shown to afford us every comfort, and
render the
voyage an agreeable one. We therefore, have great pleasure in wishing
you a
safe and quick passage home, a happy reunion with your wife and family,
and
every success in your future career. We beg to subscribe ourselves your sincere
well-wishes."
(Here follow the signatures, not printed in the
paper)
To Captain E.P.ELLIS,
Ship Empress May 13 1865
"The
undersigned passengers by the Ship Empress desire hereby to testify
their
unanimous sense and appreciation of the thorough nautical capacity
and
unfailing courtesy of manner displayed and maintained by the Chief
Officer
Mr Drew, during a long and arduous voyage, and also to make
some
acknowledgement of the able service rendered by him at all times in
the
working of the Ship. That his preserving efforts and praise worthy
conduct
may meet with success they merit, and that he may prosper in all
his
undertakings in the earnest hope of his sincere
well-wishes."

The
Parkhurst Boys. They arrived in
Auckland, New Zealand on the St George 1842
and the Mandarin in 1843. Quakers in England had arranged
for the segregation of young Offenders, who were sent to Prison on the
Island of Wight, to be taught useful Trades. It was decided to give some
of the boys a break! They would be pardoned if they agreed to go to
New Zealand, to live and work as directed on arrival.
