         KERIKERI GAZETTE: 1936

The Kerikeri Gazette was a slender publication of only 7 issues,
which reported the goings on of our small Community.. .  As Colin
LITTLE wrote....."The recordings of the Gazette are sparse, but they
           are illuminating because they were written then".

The Editor was, G.T.MORTAIN-GREEN. The Advisory Committee
was comprised of J.R.LYNESS, H.R.JENKINS, E.W.CHATER &
C.A.HAWKES and copies were sold at 2 pence each. 

KEMP MEMORIAL PRIZE
In 1919 Mr. Francis KEMP awarded special Prizes for worthiness;
the most worth boy and girl in each and every Class to receive a prize.

OBITUARY
"Kerikeri will mourn the passing of one of the oldest and most
respected inhabitants - the late Mrs. Lilian Davinia BATES."
Mrs. BATES died on Dec. 15 1935 and is survived by her husband
Mr. Harry BATES and two children, Stanley and Eleanor.

RAINFALL FOR JANUARY.
"While Capt'n EMMANUAL's instruments have recorded 14.5 inches
for January, Mr. PETER's has recorded 12.5 inches and Mr. RAY, of
N.Z. Tung Oil Corp., Waipapa, has registered 13 inches of rainfall."
(Tung Oil trees were planted in, I think, 1929, with a view to processing
the oil, but this was not a success.... However, they grow like weeds and
can be seen flourishing throughout the district!)

"During the course of a fishing expedition off Cape Brett, Mr. David
BOON landed a 200lb. swordfish with an ordinary snapper line.
Also on the boat were E.L.HOLEHOUSE, D.BOON, and F.SMITH,
fishing from Mr. Hansen's launch.".

"The new Telephone Directory is out and we now have 60 subscribers!
The Exchange is open from 7am to 9pm."

Mr. J. O'CONNOR left to reside in Auckland.
"Miss Dorothy HAWKINS, who has been staying with her Grandparents
Mr.& Mrs. E.S.LITTLE, left Kerikeri for a tour of the North Islands
Before proceeding to Shanghai via Sydney."
Mr. Vincent USSHER (sic) of Timaru is spending a holiday with Mr.
L.A.K.MOORE, Kingston Rd. Until recently Mr. USSHER resided
in China.
"The engagement is announced of Cicely HOWARD, third dau. of 
Mr. C.J.TUNKS, Remuera, Auckland, and Alexander, eldest son
of Mr.A.KNOWLES, Inverness, Scotland."

The following Kerikeri "Diggers" were present at a reunion held
at Kaikohe on Sat. 25th. April 1936. Capt. & Mrs. VOELCKER M.C., 
Capt. KNOWLES M.C., Capt. PHILLIPS  and Messrs. CRESSWELL 
M.C., CHATER, BALDOCK, KIERNANDER, COOKSEY, ARMSTRONG,
MacINTOSH, ROSS-WATTS and Sister WHITEHORN .

KERIKERI GOLF CLUB. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
The following Officers were elected for the 1936 season:

Club Captain: Mr. A. Riddell; Ladies Captain: Mrs. EDKINS;
Hon. Secretary/Treas: Mr. G. MORTAIN-GREEN; Committee:
Mrs. J. WALKER; Mr. J. WALKER; Mr. P. HARRIS and Mr.
A.R. EMANUEL.  Mr. A. RIDDELL was made the first Life
Member of the Club, in view of his generosity in providing a
Ground for the Club.

Mr. A. CLARKE owned the local Butchery. 
R.CLEAVE & Co. had the Stone Store.
G.I.DONALDSON was the Butcher at Okaihau.
C.F.HOLEHOUSE was the Prop. of the Corner Store.
J.D.Le CLERC owned the Garage & Service Station.
JOHNSTON Bros. opened the Kerikeri Nursery, selling Fruit Trees.. 
E.C.MILLER was the First Librarian for the Northern Book Club.
F. SHIRTCLIFFE advertised Launch for Hire.
C.A.TUBBS had the Kerikeri Taxi.

In 1974 The Kerikeri Chronicle came into being, because
it was felt that... "the population now being nearly 900
Householders"... it was more able to support a Local News-
paper..  Today we have a population of approximately 5000
and the Chronicle, still a Free Paper, arrives in every Letterbox 
once a fortnight.
